Appreciate and bring to life the positive strengths within you!
Ryan Niemiec and Robert E. McGrath's book on character strengths fills a gap in Hungary for both professionals interested in strengths psychology and lay readers.
The book focuses on the 24 character strengths whose system was preceded by a worldwide research process spanning many years; its uniqueness lies precisely in bringing to a common denominator the shared human experiences – across continents and religious systems – of what is best in people.
This is a practical handbook with useful knowledge and practical help for everyone to get to know, bring to life and use as fully as possible their potential, strengths, positive forces – the best part of ourselves.
We recommend it from secondary school age; readers of all ages will find plenty of useful information and practical ideas for applying character strengths in everyday life.
About the authors:
Ryan Niemiec is a psychologist, renowned speaker, education director of the VIA Institute on Character and author of nine books; this is the first of his books to be published in Hungarian.
His co-author, Robert E. McGrath, is a professor of psychology at Fairleigh Dickinson University and senior scientist at the VIA Institute; he has published numerous studies and writings on character and virtues.
Alongside emphasizing strengths, The Power of Character Strengths takes a completely new approach to our weaknesses, flaws and imperfections. It helps us, by getting to know ourselves better through our strengths, to act more consciously and concretely for the common good and for the smaller and wider communities around us, and thereby to help others increase and strengthen their psychological and mental well-being.
The book devotes a separate chapter to each character strength, helping you better understand how each strength works through practical examples and life stories. Discussing the main areas of our lives (relationships, workplace, communities, self-reflection), questions and perspectives help the reader make new discoveries along each strength, try out new ways of applying them, and thus experience the uplifting nature of character strengths.
The book offers answers to all of the following questions:
- What are your signature strengths? And what should you do with them?
- What are dormant strengths?
- How can we awaken our strengths?
- What does a strengths-based approach mean in everyday life?
- How can I grow along my strengths in my relationships, at work and in self-knowledge?
- What does underuse or overuse of strengths mean?
The book also includes a four-week Strengths Development Program, an extremely useful practical tool for turning theory into practice, knowledge into change, and ideas into a lived process.
